How big is your god? Although not the direct question addressed by Paul in chapter 9 of Romans, it is the question that undergirds all that he says. God’s sovereignty, mercy, and his decision-making rationale are all covered in this chapter, and at first glance cause all sorts of questions for modern-day readers, just as they would have for its original hearers. Like those first-century house churches, Paul is trying to help us grasp the immensity of God and comprehend the Good News of Jesus Christ, so that we do not toil away worshipping and serving a god of our own making, which is no god at all.
