We live in difficult times. People, institutions, and communities we once trusted can feel less trustworthy. Conspiracy theories, the pursuit of power, political division, and the rise of AI can make it difficult to know what—or whom—to believe.
In the midst of uncertainty, we respond in different ways. Some fight, some withdraw, some freeze, and others simply hope the darkness will pass, but there is another way. In the opening of his Gospel the Apostle John says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
As we gather this week to celebrate and anticipate God’s faithfulness in this new year, may we recognize Jesus’ presence among us and allow his light to shine through us, displacing the darkness all around.
