Have you ever met someone who seems to defy the odds—someone who accomplishes what appears impossible? At the end of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus gives such an impossible task to his disciples: “Make disciples of all nations.” At the time, there were perhaps 500 followers of Jesus and between 200 and 300 million people on the earth—a ratio of roughly one disciple for every 500,000 people. Most of us will never interact with that many people in a lifetime, let alone teach them to follow Christ. So how is this mission meant to be fulfilled? Do we lower our understanding of discipleship to make the task more manageable, or do we trust that God works beyond the limits of human reason and ability? As we begin 2026 in worship, we will explore the calling and mission Jesus entrusted to his disciples—and the divine means by which the impossible becomes possible.
